Apart from the usual strategy where you place into any 4 digit numbers you are interested in, there are also other ways to place on. The most common form of an alternative method would be using Permutations. This type of method is where you pick a number and then place on all the different possibilities of that particular number. All the different companies uses a different name in permutation games. Magnum Corporation uses mBox, Da Ma Cai uses iBox while Sports Toto uses iPerm and Sandakan 4D uses Box and no specific terms are used by Sabah 4D. This is where you pick a number, for instance you choose 9000 and decide to permute. Going by a minimum of RM1, you can inform the counter staff that you would like to permute the number. That means you will be placing for the numbers 9000, 0900, 0090 and 0009. This means that you will have placed of RM1 for each of the numbers bringing your total to RM4.
Another method of playing would be the Roll Back method where you place on 10 numbers minimum. You first pick a number, in the same example you decide to pick 9000. If you inform the counter staff that you would like to Roll back, that means you would be placing an RM1 the following numbers, 9000, 9001, 9002, 9003, 9004, 9005, 9006, 9007, 9008 and 9009. A similar method is applied by the Roll Front strategy where you change the front number instead of the last. That means for the number of 9000, you will be placing an RM1 on the numbers 9000, 8000, 7000, 6000, 5000, 4000, 3000, 2000, 1000 and 0000.
